PORTO LAGOS

Location
The OK Sailing base is located in Porto Lagos (Greek: Πόρτο Λάγος), a fishing village in within the municipality of Avdira, Xanthi region, Republic of Greece.

Nestled along the shores of a stunning bay adjacent to Lake Vistonida, Porto Lagos is positioned between the towns of Komotini (23 km) and Xanthi (27 km), approximately 50 km from the Makaza border crossing. With a population of 350 residents, the village offers essential amenities including a grocery store, various accommodations, cafes, and a tavern. Additionally, the charming resort village of Fanari is just 8 km away.
National Park
Porto Lagos is part of the National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The lagoon, classified as a "wetland", along with the surrounding beaches, falls under the protection of the Ministry of Environment in Greece. This ecologically diverse area is home to a variety of wildlife including pink flamingos, pelicans, swans, and numerous species of sea and freshwater birds. Notably, the region boasts rare endemic fish species and hosts some of the world's rarest bird species.

Lake Vistonida, a component of the Ramsar sites designated as protected areas under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, is a remarkable natural phenomenon in Greece. Its northern section is fed by freshwater from the rivers Kosinthos, Kompsatos, and Aspropotamos. Conversely, the southern part of the lake is saline, receiving seawater through the port of Porto Lagos.
Fishing
The area is extremely suitable for fishing. From the shore, you can catch horse mackerel, mullet, and mackerel. However, venturing into the sea with a boat yields a richer catch - sea bass, bream, grouper, and others.
Sightseeing
Upon reaching our port, you have the opportunity to visit the monastery of "Saint Nicholas", built entirely over water - a long wooden pedestrian bridge connects it to the shore. The monastery is subordinate to the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos. According to legend, it was founded by Emperor Arcadius, but its buildings are relatively new.
History
During the Byzantine Empire, the settlement was known as Pori (πόρος in ancient Greek, meaning passage, ford, or path). The present name, Porto Lagos, was given by Italian sailors (porto lagos - harbor of the lagoon). Until 1860, the area was highly developed economically, after which trade shifted to Kavala. In 1910, the port in Porto Lagos was served by French and Austro-Hungarian agents, and three insurance companies operated there.
